This was an amazing book. I have always heard what a wonderful writer E.L. Doctorow is. This book felt like a window into a very private world of the two Collyer brothers. Reknowned for the state of their junk packed house and the sad story of their deaths, Doctorow brings to life two real, compassionate people who lead a life of adventure in the confines of their 5th Avenue mansion. The hoarding is portrayed as more of quest by the older brother to try to understand the world after he returns from being gassed in WWI. The relationship between the two brothers is fascinating and touching. As whole, I found the more tender, more compelling, and more though-provoking than I could have imagined.
